An angry loner defies the world. No matter what you say, she will become super popular. Or else!

This theme was misunderstood by many in the US. Its pounding drive sounds like the promise of an epic action adventure. Instead it is the unleashed fury of a girl who stutters and clings to her skirt and suffers more defeats than victories.

The chains in the animation are a perfect representation of the self-made prison that some find themselves in. And they must rage until the world changes.

Lyrics

by Saeger Ryman, adapted from other translations.

WAAAAA!
Shut up and let me talk!

Ev'ry day's just like every other damn day,
People look and I have to act the right way.
Sometimes I look pretty though, don't I?
Tell me, don't you dare lie.
Cringing, huh?

Is it fine the way I am now?
Yeah, I could change, but if so how?
Sometimes I just don't give a damn
And I think I'm better off as I am.

Pass me over like I'm not even there,
Live your life, what do you care.
Reaching out, break the chain
If you dare.

I'm on my way to finding my way.
Blood, sweat, and tears all day!

Dreams be damned, this is real life!
And I say as things are
The whole world can just go to hell
Until I'm insanely popular.

All you pop'lar people had enough,
It's time you make room for me.
Stop pushing back
And let me be free!

    Liking me! Liking me!
    Liking me! Liking me!
    Loving me! Loving me!
    Loving me! Loving me!

Soon I swear it'll change,
But the way things stand now:
It's everyone else's fault
I'm not popular,
However I look at it!

YEAH!
This is a song of hope,
For those who feel the loneliness, loneliness.
What can they do for the future,
They have never known this sorrow.
Check it, breakdown!

[music]

Lies that people tell, like how
That's just the way life is.
Just cut that bullshit now!

This life sucks, and it's their fault!
They're in the way so far.
My whole life's an unending hell
Until I'm insanely popular.

All you noisy people have said enough,
It's time you listen to me.
Look at my eyes
And see my misery!

[music]

I'm on my way to finding my way.
I'm doing my best today.

Dreams be damned, this is real life!
And I say as things are
The whole world can just go to hell
Until I'm insanely popular.

All you pop'lar people had enough,
It's time you make room for me.
I'm standing here,
Please don't ignore me!

    Liking me! Liking me!
    Liking me! Liking me!
    Loving me! Loving me!
    Loving me! Loving me!

Soon I swear it'll change,
But the way things stand now:
It's everyone else's fault
I'm not popular,
However I look at it!

Notes

The precise English title of the series does not fit into those last three lines at all. Re-ordered, they fit better, but still not well enough to actually keep up with the music. So I settled for a slight rewording, and it’ll just have to do.

Arranged this way, the heaviest stress is placed where it should be, on “fault”.

It's ev-ry-one els-es FAULT
(quicker) I'm not pop-u-lar

The next stress is at “at”.

How-e-ver (I/you) look AT it.

The third full verse contains some invention on my part, because either I don’t fully understand the meaning, or the words simply fall flatter in English. I added a line about breaking the chain to make the verse more dramatic, and to relate to the well-known image of Tomoko breaking her chains.

Pass me over like I'm not even there,
Live your life, what do you care.
Reaching out, break the chain
If you dare.

I may revisit this.
